Blackburn Rovers felt that his performances on the pitch deserved an England call up for the World Cup qualifier against Holland in Rotterdam after missing out for 11 months out through injury. Shearer had scored a couple against Swindon Town and had another chance to add to it against Bournemouth in the cup.
Alan Shearer said “I knew it was up to me to produce the goods when I got back in the Blackburn side and I think I have done well. Graham Taylor kept in touch with me during my injury and told me there was a place for me if I could fight my way back. I didn’t know he was at our game at Swindon on Saturday until after the match but hopefully, I did enough to prove I am back to best.”
