Transfer Listed Ronnie Whelan was on the brink of an Anfield recall for Liverpool’s second leg, Coca Cola Cup tie against Fulham. Whelan was beginning to believe that he may not, after all, have to leave his beloved Merseyside for another club at such a late stage in his career. Whelan had denied knowledge of genuine interest from Wolves, Sheffield United or Nottingham Forest but confirmed that he was likely to be on the subs bench again.
Ronnie Whelan said “I was sub last Saturday against Arsenal, which was a bit unexpected. Now I don’t know what is going to happen. In fairness, the team has played well in the last couple of games and should have beaten both Chelsea and Arsenal but I may have just a half-chance to get back in here. Then if things did pick up. I could be back in the picture playing here. Who knows? It’s between me, Steve Nicol, and Steve McManaman. I’m coping fine at the moment. I don’t let things get me down because there is not a lot I can do about it. But I’m keeping myself right just in case things take a turn. It would suit me time to get back into the team here. That’s the ideal move! “On the other hand, if the manager insists that he is going to listen to offers, then I am going to have to go. There is little I can do about that if he’s definitely not going to put me back in the team.”
