Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes has once again demonstrated his leadership qualities and generosity, leaving a lasting impression on young goalkeeper Dermot Mee. During a training session, Mee entered into a friendly challenge with Fernandes, which he ultimately lost. However, the Portuguese midfielder still presented Mee with a signed shirt, showcasing his sportsmanship and camaraderie.
Dermot Mee said: “Probably say when I was about 18, first time I went up and trained with them, he gave me a bet – If I could save two out of five of his shots he’d give me a signed shirt. I didn’t do it but he went and got me one anyway.”
Mee, who began his career at Walsall before joining Manchester United in 2019, was invited to train with the first team after impressing in the youth ranks. The challenge involved Mee attempting to save two out of five shots from Fernandes, with the reward being a signed shirt from the United captain. Despite failing to meet the challenge, Fernandes’ gesture of gifting the shirt left a profound impact on the young goalkeeper.
Fernandes’ influence extends beyond the training ground, as he continues to be a pivotal figure for Manchester United. His quick thinking and decisive actions on the field have resulted in memorable moments, such as his free-kick against Arsenal last season, which secured a 1-1 draw. Additionally, Fernandes’ performance against Liverpool in April 2024, where he capitalized on a misplaced pass to equalize the match, is fondly remembered by his teammates.
The 31-year-old midfielder has also been instrumental in Manchester United’s recent successes, scoring in both of their victories this season. His last-minute penalty against Burnley and a goal against Chelsea further cement his status as a key player for the team.
Mee, who is yet to make an appearance for the Red Devils, has been gaining valuable experience through loan spells in non-league football with clubs such as Witton Albion and Altrincham. He has also participated in a training camp in San Diego and played in a pre-season friendly against Wrexham, furthering his development as a promising goalkeeper.
Bruno Fernandes’ leadership and generosity continue to inspire his teammates, both on and off the pitch. His ability to create memorable moments and foster a positive team environment highlights his importance to Manchester United.
