James Garner
Everton’s James Garner has opened up about the challenges faced by the team following a series of changes in their line-up during their recent match at Molineux. Garner was one of only four players who retained their place in the squad from the previous game against Liverpool, which ended in a 2-1 loss at Anfield. The alterations in the team composition posed difficulties for the players, as Garner acknowledged.
James Garner said: “Of course it’s a challenge. There are a lot of familiar faces but at the same time there are a few new faces as well. The first half wasn’t good enough, but we definitely showed glimpses of what we have been at the start of the season in the second half.”
Garner expressed his disappointment over the team’s early exit from the tournament, emphasizing the importance of progressing in any competition they enter. The midfielder also highlighted the need to shift focus to their upcoming Premier League fixture against West Ham United, aiming to secure three points.
James Garner said: “I think any tournament or cup you enter, you want to go as far as you can so to go out now, playing against a team who we probably thought we’re in a better place than at the moment form-wise, and going in the right direction, so to lose is a big disappointment. We’ve got to turn our focus now to the game on Monday (home to West Ham United) and that’s the aim going forward now, to take three points.”
During the match, Garner took on a leadership role in the absence of his usual veteran teammate Idrissa Gueye. He aimed to exert more influence in the midfield alongside Tim Iroegbunam, showcasing his natural leadership qualities and vocal presence on the pitch.
James Garner said: “I’m quite a natural leader anyway with the way I am and I’m very vocal. We need to be 100% ready to go. I had a few chances, but I need to do better. I need to start scoring more. These are nights where I should be helping the team a little bit more with either a goal, my creativity from set-pieces or open play.”
Reflecting on the match, Garner noted the team’s failure to execute their game plan early on, allowing the opposition to settle and score an avoidable goal. However, he took some positives from the second half, where Everton displayed a more attacking approach and maintained pressure in the opponent’s penalty area.
James Garner said: “We let them settle down into the game and that wasn’t our gameplan at all. We wanted to get right after them and get control of the game early on. We didn’t want them to score what was a very avoidable goal and it was tough from there. But in the second half I thought we showed the team that we have been in the first few games of the season, we were a lot more attacking, and we had them in their penalty box for the last 20-30 minutes.”
One of the few positives for Garner was Tyler Dibling’s full debut for Everton. The 19-year-old, a significant summer signing from Southampton, played on the right wing before being substituted for Iliman Ndiaye. Garner expressed his happiness for Dibling’s opportunity and hopes for more playing time for the young talent.
James Garner said: “I was happy for Tyler to get his first start. I’m hoping he can get some more minutes, and he can show the fans what he can really do.”
As Everton prepares for their match against West Ham, Garner and his teammates are focused on regaining their form and securing a victory to boost their league campaign.
