Merlin Rohl’s transfer from SC Freiburg to Everton during the summer transfer window has been a significant development for both clubs. The 23-year-old midfielder moved to Everton on a season-long loan, which includes an obligation to buy for just over £18 million in 2026. Rohl, who has been on Everton’s radar for a while, made his debut for the club against Aston Villa but has missed recent matches due to injury.
Jochen Saier said: “There were external factors such as injuries and illness, for which Merlin cannot be blamed and which we have to accept. After his return in the second half of the season, things went well for the team, and it wasn’t easy for him to get into the starting line up.”
Jochen Saier added: “What role will Merlin play for us? In which position will he secure and consolidate a starting spot? What difference will he make in terms of scoring points? Because if you don’t make a transfer like that, you have to keep a real, consistent return on the pitch. Merlin, too, was keen to take this exciting step, the conditions were right for us. Merlin was only very rarely used in the centre, at six or eight, but was mostly deployed in the attacking positions. Especially behind the striker, we have personnel options in Johan Manzambi, Eren Dinkci, and Yuito Suzuki, whom we believe will develop well with regular playing time.”
Rohl’s transfer comes after an impressive stint at SC Freiburg, where he played almost 50 Bundesliga games over the past three seasons. His contribution was also notable during the U21s Euros, where he was a second-half substitute for Germany in the final against England. Despite his talents, fitness issues and competition for starting positions at Freiburg prompted the club to agree to the transfer.
Everton sees Rohl as a versatile player who can also operate as a left-back, adding depth to their squad. The club’s decision to secure his services reflects their long-term vision and belief in his potential impact on the team’s performance. However, Rohl’s immediate contribution to Everton has been hampered by injuries, causing him to miss crucial matches against Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The move to Everton represents an exciting opportunity for Rohl to establish himself in the Premier League. As he recovers from his injuries, both Everton and SC Freiburg will be keenly watching his progress, hoping that he fulfills the promise that led to his transfer.
