Nottingham Forest is set to make a significant return to European competition for the first time in three decades as they kick off their Europa League campaign against Real Betis in Spain on Wednesday evening. The Reds approach the midweek clash with renewed optimism after securing their first point under new head coach Ange Postecoglou, following a 1-1 draw against Burnley. Despite this positive development, the team faces several injury challenges that could impact their lineup against the Spanish side.
Ange Postecoglou said: “He was close (to being involved at Burnley), but it makes no sense risking players. I’ve been really happy with Morato at centre-back. He’s done well. I thought he stood up. But the medical team tell me he (Murillo) should be ready for Wednesday.”
Murillo’s injury has been a point of concern for Nottingham Forest. The defender initially attempted to continue playing after receiving on-field treatment but was substituted just before halftime. Despite missing the Carabao Cup defeat to Swansea City and the recent draw at Burnley, Murillo is expected to recover in time for the Europa League fixture, providing a boost to Forest’s defensive options.
Ola Aina said on Instagram: “Surgery went really well and recovery is going smoothly. A massive thank you to the club @officialnffc, my teammates, and all the fans for the incredible support over the past few days, it’s meant a lot. I’ll be working hard every day to get back out there as soon as possible and can’t wait to be back on the pitch at the City Ground. See you soon.”
Ola Aina, however, is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury during international duty with Nigeria. The full-back, who limped off just 10 minutes into the match against South Africa, underwent successful surgery and is expected to be out for at least three months. Consequently, Aina was omitted from Forest’s 25-man Premier League squad for the first half of the season.
Ange Postecoglou said: “Nico Dominguez is hopefully getting ready to integrate into full team training next week. That will be great for him and great for us to have him back in the squad.”
Nicolas Dominguez is another key player working towards recovery. The midfielder suffered a serious meniscus injury in his left leg during the final day of last season against Chelsea. After undergoing surgery, Dominguez is expected to be sidelined until October. However, Postecoglou expressed optimism about Dominguez’s progress, indicating that he might soon rejoin full team training.
As Nottingham Forest prepares for their European encounter, the team will need to navigate these injury challenges carefully. The return of Murillo will be crucial for strengthening their defense, while the absence of Aina and Dominguez will require strategic adjustments. The Reds aim to make a strong impression on their return to the European stage, with hopes of building on their recent positive results.
