Eddie Howe Bournemouth
Newcastle United’s head coach, Eddie Howe, has acknowledged the team’s struggles in front of goal, following a challenging match where several players failed to convert opportunities. Despite a strong performance last season, Newcastle’s attacking line has found it difficult to break through defenses in recent games. Howe emphasized the need for the entire team to improve their offensive contributions, not just the forwards.
Eddie Howe said: “Alex wouldn’t have scored a goal for us if we didn’t get up the pitch and get the ball into dangerous areas. I think we have to do that better as a team. Of course, he’s a goal-getter. You look at his record last year, it was very, very strong. I don’t think that was a criticism of him today, but more of the team.”
Howe continued: “I thought we played well, so it’s a difficult one to instantly critique our attacking work. But Howe said his midfielders must also start chipping in with assists or at least goal threats. It’s one place (the wide area) to look. I think our midfield has to contribute as well. I think you’re only as good as your defenders as well, so I think it’s a knock-on through the team.”
He added: “Whenever you go through a period where you don’t score, I think you have to look at all areas. I don’t think you can limit it to the wingers, but of course, those players have to be productive, and I think they always have been historically for us.”
In the recent match, Howe experimented with different attacking combinations, including Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock in the first half, followed by Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga after the break. Despite these changes, Newcastle failed to find the back of the net. Howe’s comments suggest a holistic approach to improving the team’s offensive output, highlighting the importance of contributions from midfielders and defenders in creating goal-scoring opportunities.
The head coach also mentioned the absence of key players like Yoane, who is expected to return soon, and JJ, who is currently injured. This situation has added to the challenges Newcastle faces in maintaining their attacking prowess.
Sky Sports, which will broadcast at least 215 live Premier League games this season, provides a platform for fans to follow Newcastle’s progress as they work to overcome these challenges. As the season progresses, Howe’s focus on team-wide improvement will be crucial in revitalizing Newcastle’s goal-scoring capabilities.
