Nottingham Forest’s head coach, Ange Postecoglou, expressed optimism about his team’s development after securing a 1-1 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor. Having taken over from Nuno Espirito Santo just over a week ago, Postecoglou has already witnessed significant transformation in the team’s playstyle, despite facing two initial defeats against Arsenal and Swansea City in the Carabao Cup.
Ange Postecoglou said: “We haven’t had time to bed things down and work on things because the league is up and running. But the last seven days, since the Arsenal game, already I can see the team is transforming in terms of the way we are working with and without the ball, and the understanding of what we are trying to do. That is the biggest encouragement for me because it means the players are listening. They are responding. On the sidelines today, there were times in the game where I was thinking, OK, this is starting to look like the team I want us to be. That’s the most important thing. We certainly created enough chances to win the game. Within that context, there were still some sloppy moments. There are still things we can improve on.”
Postecoglou continued: “I’m disappointed we didn’t get the three points; I think we certainly deserved them on the balance of play. But I’m very encouraged by the way the players approached the game and the way they endeavoured to play the football I want us to. The mentality was just so good.”
The match saw Neco Williams give Forest an early lead, scoring just two minutes into the game. However, Burnley’s Jaidon Anthony equalized in the 20th minute. Despite the draw, Forest displayed an impressive style of play, which Postecoglou believes is a positive sign of the team’s progression under his leadership.
The head coach’s remarks highlight a focus on the team’s tactical evolution, emphasizing improved understanding and execution of the game plan. While acknowledging areas for improvement, Postecoglou remains confident in his players’ ability to adapt and execute his vision on the field. The draw at Burnley marks an important step in the team’s journey under new management, with Postecoglou’s influence already becoming evident.
