ange Postecoglou
Ange Postecoglou has quickly made his presence felt as the new head coach of Nottingham Forest. Although the team has yet to reach the level he envisions, there are promising signs of progress. Full-back Neco Williams is optimistic about the direction Forest is heading under Postecoglou’s leadership. The team secured their first point with a 1-1 draw against Burnley, marking a positive step as they transition from a cautious approach to a more attacking style of play.
Neco Williams said: “We created a lot of chances, but we couldn’t put it to bed. At half-time, he (Postecoglou) said we needed to keep going, it’s 1-1, we’re not losing so keep doing what we were doing. There are lots of positives to take and we will learn on the negatives and put it right for our European game (against Real Betis in the Europa League on Wednesday). We play, we review, we recover and then we play. A tough period but also an exciting period.”
Williams added: “It’s all about the team, if I am scoring it’s going to help the team, it’s going to make us better. It happened quick, came on the edge so I shot and it went in. We know how organised Burnley are, they want to sit in and catch teams on the counterattack. It was very important to get the first goal, but the thing that killed us was that end product.”
Postecoglou’s influence was evident as Forest took an early lead at Turf Moor, with Williams scoring just two minutes into the match. The goal, resulting from a deflected shot after a corner by Douglas Luiz, showcased the attacking intent instilled by the new manager. However, the team’s defensive vulnerabilities were exposed when Oleksandr Zinchenko equalized for Burnley in the 20th minute. Despite creating numerous opportunities, Forest struggled to convert them into goals, a challenge they must address moving forward.
The match highlighted the dual nature of Postecoglou’s style—while it promotes positive attacking play, it also leaves the team open at the back. Forest’s defense was tested, with Burnley capitalizing on this openness. Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was instrumental in keeping the score level, making several crucial saves, including denying efforts from Igor Jesus and Williams in the closing stages.
As Forest continue to adapt to Postecoglou’s philosophy, the draw against Burnley represents a step in the right direction. The team will aim to build on this performance and sharpen their finishing ahead of their upcoming Europa League clash against Real Betis. The point gained at Burnley, while not the victory they sought, is a testament to the positive changes underway at Nottingham Forest.
