Hugo Ekitike
Liverpool asserted their dominance in the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over local rivals Everton. The match saw Hugo Ekitike double Liverpool’s lead with a composed finish before the break, while Everton’s Idrissa Gueye managed to pull one back in the second half. Despite the pressure, Liverpool held on to secure the win.
Jermaine Pennant said: “We’re seeing this thing with Liverpool. You felt at any stage Liverpool can take it up a couple of notches. They haven’t [got going yet]. They’ve got a lot of players in there who are new to the system, new to the team, so as soon as they start gelling and getting better – then on top of that you’re going to get a fit Alexander Isak as well to throw in the mix – you’ve gotta be happy if you’re a Liverpool fan, if you’re the Liverpool team at the minute. And the manager, knowing, ‘Once my team are on song, up to speed, if we can put in performances like this and get the results then what is gonna happen?’ There is a lot of games, 38 in the Premier League and then you’ve got Champions League and cup games.”
James McAteer said on beIN SPORTS: “The challenge of what Everton are gonna throw up. I think history, certainly under David Moyes… first of all, it’s a big, big game still for the nature of what the fixture is. David Moyes gets his success in this fixture, I think, from bullying Liverpool. Away last season at Goodison, you can argue it was the last game, the last derby [at that stadium], but he sets his team up to bully Liverpool. It means Wirtz is five Premier League appearances without a goal contribution. I wouldn’t say he’s been anonymous. He probably emphasises Liverpool’s performances as a whole – patchy. He’s played in patches. His quality is there to be seen when he’s having his good little spells. He created four or five great opportunities against Atletico Madrid. I’m not disagreeing with you that in certain games you would have expected a little bit more from him, but his balance, his creativity, the way he gets into little pockets. It’s not his fault Liverpool don’t sometimes serve him, but the quality is there.”
Danny Murphy said: “There’s good signs, because in most matches they’ve had great moments. I think in midweek (against Atletico Madrid) they were really good bar the little spell in the second-half. Today (against Everton) the more obvious thing was the fatigue, but still so many new players forming relationships and understanding what each of them does. There are still so many new players forming relationships and understanding what each other does. Ekitike is different to [Alexander] Isak – so if you’re playing with either one you have to learn their traits. So to win five out of five without playing at your best is a phenomenal start for them and actually is a really good sign.”
Wayne Rooney said: “Ekitike, he’s a good player. He’s really clever here. He can see that [Vitalii] Mykolenko is deeper, he knows he can stay in behind Michael Keane. Michael Keane can’t get back, [James] Tarkowski isn’t quick enough to cover. Just here, that allows Ekitike to get his shot off and it is a fantastic finish – it makes it very difficult for Everton to get back into the game.”
Liverpool’s performance against Everton highlighted their resilience and ability to secure results even when not at their best. The integration of new players into the squad is still ongoing, but the early signs are promising. With five wins out of five, Liverpool’s start to the season is a testament to their potential to compete on multiple fronts, including the Premier League and Champions League. As the team continues to gel, fans can look forward to even more impressive performances in the future.
