Fabian Hürzeler
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler has urged his players to demonstrate resilience as they prepare to face Tottenham at home. Following a disappointing defeat to Bournemouth, Hurzeler has been vocal about the need for his team to bounce back and maintain intensity throughout the match.
Fabian Hurzeler said: “I think we are not in a bad place. When I see the guys training, when I see them working together, playing together, enjoying the time together, then we seem to be in a good place. Of course, against Bournemouth we had a very unlucky start to the game with the injuries. These kind of things create something in a team. That is a setback for the team and I think we overcame it quite well in the first half. Then we scored the 1-1 and then, when we conceded the second goal, our reactions weren’t the best and that is what we really analysed. In some moments we might be a little bit frustrated that we can’t keep the quality for 90 minutes.”
Fabian Hurzeler continued: “Our job is to get into game, to accept when there is a setback regarding when we concede a goal. To accept when we make mistakes and to not stay too much in this phase of bad emotions. We have to get out as quick as possible, to get into these positive emotions, into the mental side where we say, ‘All right, we accept mistakes, we accept the bad phase, we accept the setback and now we go on again’. We are able to beat everyone, we are able to score in every situation of the game and that’s where we really have to work, to build this mental resilience. That not one setback or one mistake can bring us out of our rhythm.”
Hurzeler’s comments came after a more critical assessment of the team’s performance against Bournemouth, where he expressed disappointment over the lack of intensity and the gaps between the defensive, midfield, and attacking lines. He acknowledged that honest discussions have taken place behind closed doors since the defeat, aiming to address these issues.
The sudden departure of technical director David Weir was also noted to have impacted the players, with Hurzeler emphasizing the importance of focusing on football and performance. He observed a positive reaction from the squad during the week’s training sessions, highlighting their enjoyment and intensity in preparation for the match against Spurs.
Brighton will need to harness this mental resilience and unity to overcome Tottenham, as they aim to improve upon their previous performance and secure a positive result. Hurzeler remains optimistic about his team’s ability to rise to the challenge and deliver a more consistent display.
