Unai Emery
Morgan Rogers, who showcased his potential while playing for England earlier this month, has been unable to replicate last season’s form at Aston Villa. Despite his previous success, Unai Emery’s side has yet to score in the league after four matches this season. Rogers, now in his second full season with Villa after a £15 million move from Middlesbrough in January 2024, played a crucial role in Villa’s top-four finish last season and their Champions League campaign, which ended in the quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain. However, his recent performances have raised questions about his current form.
Unai Emery said: “He was playing two years ago in the Championship. He started here playing in the Premier League and in Europe, also the Champions League. It is, for him, how he is reaching his demands. To keep it is the next challenge.”
Emery added: “Fatigue in September? That is difficult! He has played lots of matches, but for him, and other players as well, we played 54 matches last season. Adding the matches of the national team, maybe he played 60 or 65 matches. We have to be aware how we manage every player for the season, but for now, he is so motivated. As well, he wants to start performing better with us. He is showing us each training session. He is really anxious to recover his level. I am telling him to get balance and accept how we are improving. We are not getting the same level in every match, but be confident you will get the same level again.”
Rogers’ transition from the Championship to the Premier League and European competitions has been notable, yet maintaining that level of performance remains a challenge. Emery dismissed fatigue as a factor for Rogers’ slow start, emphasizing the player’s motivation and commitment in training sessions. Last season, Rogers recorded seven goal involvements, including a memorable hat-trick against Celtic, highlighting his potential impact on the team.
The focus now is on how Rogers can regain his form and contribute to Villa’s campaign. With the team struggling to find the net, his return to form could be pivotal for Emery’s side. The manager’s faith in Rogers’ ability to bounce back is evident, as he continues to guide the player towards achieving consistency and confidence on the pitch.
