Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed that midfielder Matt O’Riley will spend the remainder of the season on loan at Marseille. This decision comes after head coach Fabian Hurzeler expressed confidence in O’Riley’s continued presence at the club. The move is part of a broader strategy to manage squad depth and provide players with valuable playing time.
Fabian Hurzeler said: “I always want to emphasise that all these kind of decisions, they are club decisions, and we do them together, so it’s not only a decision from my side or from Tony [Bloom]. It’s always a decision we do together, we have a very open exchange, and therefore we always try to figure out what is the best for the club, we try to figure out what is the best for the team, what is the best for the individual player.”
Fabian added: “We also have to make sure that we can give everyone the right chance, the right possibility to be on the pitch, because if they’re not playing, if they’re not on the pitch, we can’t give them enough attention and we develop them. We need to develop these young players, because they all have the potential, but they are not done yet, so we have to get the potential out of them, you only get the potential out of them if you give them time, if you put a lot of effort into them, that’s the main thing. If it’s too big [the squad] you can’t do this in a very individualised way, that’s why we have to make decisions, they might seem to be tough, but I think they were the best.”
He further stated: “Matt has the opportunity to challenge himself at the highest level in France and in the Champions League. We will monitor his progress throughout the season with Marseille, and we wish him well for the rest of the season.”
O’Riley, a Denmark international, joined Albion and quickly made an impact by scoring on his Premier League debut against Manchester City in November. Despite his promising start, the midfielder has only started 13 league games, scoring three goals and assisting two. His limited playing time this season, including a goal against Fulham, prompted the club to consider a loan move to ensure his continued development.
The decision to loan O’Riley reflects Brighton’s strategy to manage their squad effectively. The club boasts a strong midfield lineup, including Carlos Baleba, Mats Wieffer, Jack Hinshelwood, Yasin Ayari, Diego Gomez, James Milner, and Brajan Gruda. By allowing O’Riley to gain experience in France, Brighton aims to develop his potential further while maintaining a competitive squad at home.
Notable players on loan this season include Evan Ferguson to Roma, Facundo Buonanotte to Chelsea, and Igor to West Ham. These moves highlight Brighton’s commitment to nurturing talent and ensuring players receive adequate playing time to reach their full potential.
