Matt Targett Aston Villa
Matt Targett has made a significant move to Middlesbrough on a season-long loan, joining the club’s efforts to secure promotion to the Premier League. This strategic acquisition sees Targett joining forces with fellow Aston Villa academy graduate Finn Azaz, who has already made an impact this season by scoring in Boro’s recent 2-1 victory over Norwich City. Middlesbrough currently sits second in the Championship, trailing only Stoke City, and Targett’s inclusion is expected to bolster their campaign further.
Matt Targett said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be here. Obviously, the club has got off to a fantastic start in the Championship so I’m really looking forward to joining and helping the team.” He added: “I haven’t played much football recently. The bonus is they’ve made a brilliant start in the Championship, so I’m looking forward to adding my experience/quality to the team.” Targett continued, “Hopefully I can help a lot of players out.”
Targett, who will wear the number three shirt, brings a wealth of experience to Middlesbrough, having spent 14 of his 15 senior seasons in the Premier League. His presence is anticipated to be a valuable asset for the team, particularly given their impressive start to the season, with nine points from their first three matches. Targett has been closely monitoring Boro’s games and has praised their offensive capabilities and goal-scoring prowess.
Matt Targett said: “I had a phone call with the manager. He was very honest with me. The aim is to get this club back in the Premier League and I share the same ambition.”
The decision to join Middlesbrough was influenced by a conversation with Boro manager Edwards, who outlined the club’s ambitions and secured Targett’s commitment. Despite interest from other clubs, Targett was swayed by the shared vision of returning to the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Finn Azaz’s future at Middlesbrough remains uncertain as Southampton has already made one transfer bid for the 24-year-old, which was rejected. Azaz, who joined Boro from Aston Villa in January 2024, has scored 17 goals in 67 league appearances. Boro manager Edwards expressed confidence in Azaz’s professionalism and performance, particularly highlighting his recent goal at Carrow Road.
Middlesbrough’s pursuit of Premier League promotion is further energized by the addition of Targett, and the club remains focused on maintaining their strong start to the season.
