Daniel Farke
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has confirmed that midfielder Ao Tanaka will be out of action for several weeks due to a knee injury. This development comes in the wake of Leeds’ Carabao Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday. Tanaka, a key player in Leeds’ title-winning campaign, sustained the injury during a heavy 5-0 loss to Arsenal. The Japanese international now joins captain Ethan Ampadu on the injury list, posing a significant challenge for Farke as he navigates the upcoming fixtures.
Daniel Farke said: “It is MCL injury. He will be out for a few weeks, not sure how long. Not back before international break. Similar to Ampadu.”
Despite making nine changes to the team that faced Arsenal, Leeds struggled to find cohesion in the first half against Sheffield Wednesday. Although they dominated possession with 78%, they failed to significantly challenge Sheffield’s goalkeeper, Ethan Horvath. The Owls took a surprising lead in the 63rd minute through Jamal Lowe’s goal, which slipped past Karl Darlow. Leeds responded with efforts from Noah Okafor and Wilfried Gnonto, but it was Jayden Bogle who eventually equalized with nine minutes left on the clock.
The match proceeded to penalties, where Leeds faltered. Joel Piroe, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Sean Longstaff all missed their spot-kicks, allowing Sheffield Wednesday to secure their spot in the third round.
Farke told Sky Sports: “A Premier League side is the favourite and the Championship side is more or less the underdog. It was just this type of football game where we had more than 85 per cent possession. Somehow they managed to be one time in our box, and somehow they have scored. Yes, we have simply missed too many chances. I have never seen Joel Piroe miss a penalty, but he is the first one that goes and misses. It happens sometimes in football. Sometimes this type of game is written in the stars. They have fought very hard and somewhat deserve to be in the second half. They’re all professional football players and it is not like we played an under-21 side. We were the favourite today, there is no doubt about it, but this happens quite often in a cup game.”
The injuries to Tanaka and Ampadu present a significant test for Farke, who will need to rethink his strategy with key players unavailable. Leeds’ recent performances have shown vulnerabilities, and the manager will be keen to address these issues before the international break. The team’s inability to convert possession into goals and capitalize on opportunities has been a recurring theme, underscoring the need for tactical adjustments moving forward.
