Leeds United faced a tough challenge on Saturday as they succumbed to a 5-0 defeat against Arsenal, with defender Pascal Struijk pinpointing the second goal as the pivotal moment. The match saw Leeds initially hold their ground for 35 minutes before Jurrien Timber’s header broke the deadlock. Bukayo Saka’s strike in added time at the end of the first half further compounded Leeds’ woes, with Viktor Gyokeres’ goal shortly after the break sealing their fate. The subsequent goals highlighted Leeds’ defensive frailties as Arsenal showed no mercy.
Pascal Struijk said: “Over the last few years we’ve seen where they have finished in the season, so they are a really good team. I feel like we were good and solid until around minute 35 when we conceded at the set-piece. You look at the record they have set-pieces and they’re a pretty good team. We were just a bit unfortunate to go in at half-time having conceded for two-nil. I just feel that changed the momentum going in. We can’t dwell on it too much because we’ve got a quick turnaround.”
Daniel Farke said: “A bit annoying how we conceded because two goals out of set pieces. We are disappointed today, but we won’t over analyse this game too much. Yes, there were one or two things that we could have done better. No doubt about this. Otherwise we wouldn’t have conceded two times at a time to a set piece.”
The match underscored the challenges Leeds United face against top-tier teams like Arsenal, who have consistently performed well in recent seasons. Despite a promising start, Leeds’ inability to defend set-pieces proved costly, as acknowledged by both Struijk and manager Daniel Farke. The heavy defeat, however, is not seen as a season-defining result, with Farke emphasizing the need to focus on upcoming fixtures. Leeds will need to address their defensive vulnerabilities and regain confidence as they prepare for their next challenge.
