Everton fans experienced a momentous occasion as their team played its first match at the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter. The Toffees faced Roma in their final pre-season game, which resulted in a 1-0 defeat due to a 69th-minute goal by Matias Soule. Despite the loss, the event was filled with excitement and anticipation as fans gathered at the new venue, realizing a dream that had been in the making for nearly a decade.
Tom Davis said: “We have lots of memories there, some good and some bad. We’re going to miss Goodison but it had a good send-off and it’s a new start here. We think it’s going to be electric in there today because it’s the first time at full capacity. We’ve been to the last test game and it’s an incredible ground but it’s going to take a little bit of getting used to for everyone.”
Alex Debenney said: “To have a full stadium and see the first team go out there was really quite special given how long we’ve waited for it. You can tell it’s going to be loud but it will take a few moments before you can replicate what it was like in Goodison. Having the unobstructed views, being able to see the pitch from anywhere, is a big bonus.”
Barbara Wearing said: “It still remains a walk and I can just about make it there and back. It’s impressive. I think they’re going to have some teething troubles but I think that they’ll figure their way out as we go forward. I’m very impressed, I don’t want to downplay it. We want the best team in the best ground in the league or making steps towards it. It’s a stepping stone.”
John Jones said: “The stadium is magnificent. The facilities are second-to-none. It’s got to be the best stadium in the country, if not Europe. It felt special to walk in, especially with my little lad.”
The event was not just about the match but also about the fans’ journey to the stadium. Merseytravel had advised fans to walk from Moorfields station instead of Sandhills to manage capacity, but the new footbridge at Sandhills ensured smooth foot traffic. Fans expressed mixed emotions, with many reminiscing about Goodison Park while embracing the new state-of-the-art facilities at Bramley-Moore Dock.
The transition to the new stadium is seen as a crucial step for Everton’s future. It represents a significant investment in the club’s infrastructure, aiming to boost its appeal to potential players and agents. While some fans acknowledged the challenges of adapting to a new environment, the consensus was that the move was necessary for the club’s growth and success.
This historic day was a blend of nostalgia and optimism, as Evertonians celebrated the realization of a long-held dream while looking forward to the possibilities that the new stadium brings.
