Newcastle United is grappling with injury concerns as they prepare for their Premier League opener against Aston Villa at Villa Park. The match is set to kick off at 12:30 pm on Saturday. The Magpies are dealing with the potential absence of key players, including Alexander Isak, who has expressed a desire to join Liverpool, and Anthony Gordon, who sustained an injury during a recent pre-season match.
Eddie Howe said: “We’ve had discussions and it’s clear at the moment that we can’t involve him with the group. So, yeah, I don’t know how long that will be for. That’s the latest. He’s here, of course he has a future at Newcastle. Certainly from our perspective, everyone connected with the club, we would love to see him back with the team. But the situation has to be right for that time. I’d want Alex to be playing today. I’d want him training tomorrow. We would love the player to be with us. But I don’t see that changing [the current situation] before Aston Villa.”
Eddie Howe also commented on Anthony Gordon’s condition: “I think he’s got an ankle problem. Initially, maybe he thought it was a muscle problem, but the good news is I think it was just a twist. So the initial feeling is he should be okay.”
Newcastle concluded their pre-season with a 2–0 defeat to Atletico Madrid at St. James’ Park, which added to their current challenges. The injury to Anthony Gordon, who was forced off the pitch during the match, has raised concerns about his availability for the upcoming fixture. Despite the setback, Howe remains optimistic about Gordon’s recovery, suggesting that the injury might not be as severe as initially feared.
The focus now shifts to the Premier League curtain-raiser against Aston Villa, where Newcastle will aim to start their campaign on a positive note. The Magpies will need to manage their squad carefully, especially with Isak’s situation unresolved and Gordon’s fitness in question. As the season unfolds, Newcastle fans will be eager to see how the team adapts to these early challenges and whether they can maintain their competitive edge.
