AFC Bournemouth narrowly missed out on advancing in the FA Cup last season after a close 1-0 defeat to Ipswich Town, who later topped the National League Southern Premier Division. The Cherries also faced a tough challenge in the Plate final against Cheltenham, highlighting the competitive nature of their fixtures against higher-tier teams.
Steve Cuss said: “And then we played Cheltenham in the Plate final as well, which I thought our first half performance in the final was excellent and one of our strongest of the season. Our performance in the first half was excellent, but we never got away from Cheltenham. They came back at us in the second half and we had to be really strong defensively to win that cup. I think that that’s what we’re going to face week in, week out, strong opposition, and it’s going to be a challenge every single week to try and get a positive result.”
Cuss continued: “I thought Exeter did really well, obviously. I think they finished fourth in the end, which was a great achievement for them to step up to tier three at the first attempt and finish fourth. I think last year there was a clear favourite in Ipswich who had almost gone full-time and got a really good squad and they were clear favourites to win tier three and they did that.”
Cuss’s reflections underscore the competitive landscape of the league, where teams like Ipswich Town have set a high bar by transitioning to a near full-time setup, allowing them to dominate the tier. Exeter City’s promotion to the Southern Premier and their subsequent fourth-place finish in the third tier further exemplify the challenges faced by teams like Bournemouth. The Grecians’ impressive record of 13 wins with only five defeats in their debut season at this level is a testament to their capability and ambition.
Looking ahead, Cuss anticipates a more open competition this year, suggesting that the absence of a clear favorite could lead to a more unpredictable and exciting season. The manager’s comments reflect a recognition of the need for resilience and consistent performance against formidable opponents to achieve success.
