Sunderland AFC has successfully secured the signing of Simon Adingra from Brighton & Hove Albion on a five-year contract. The transfer fee, while undisclosed, is believed to be around £18.5 million upfront, with potential future add-ons. Adingra’s addition is expected to bolster Sunderland’s forward line with his speed and versatility, as the club aims to solidify its position in the Premier League following their recent promotion.
Kristjaan Speakman said: “Our long-standing interest in Simon has been well documented and it’s no secret that we worked hard to bring him to the Club in January, so it’s great to finally see him on Wearside. He’s a quick and direct wide player, who can play on both sides and travels with the ball at speed. He’s got significant Premier League experience, which is important for us as a newly promoted team, and due to our recent connection with him, he already has a strong understanding of Sunderland AFC and our journey.”
The Côte d’Ivoire international made 33 appearances for Brighton last season, including 29 in the Premier League. His experience in the top tier is seen as a valuable asset for Sunderland as they look to make an impact in the league. Adingra’s ability to play on both wings and his pace make him a versatile option for the team.
Fabian Hurzeler said: “I have enjoyed working with Simon and he’s made a significant contribution during his time with the club. However, he is at a stage in his career where he wants to be playing regularly. This move to Sunderland gives him that opportunity, so on behalf of everyone, I’d like to thank Simon for his efforts and wish him well for the future.”
Adingra’s transfer also highlights Sunderland’s ambition and strategic planning in the transfer market, aiming to strengthen their squad with players who have Premier League experience. His move to Sunderland offers him the regular playing time he seeks, which Brighton could no longer guarantee under Hurzeler’s management.
Simon Adingra said: “It’s a pleasure to be here, and I cannot wait to get started. The Club and the project are really exciting. I spoke with everyone and their interest in me made the decision easy – I wanted to be part of Sunderland’s future. Playing in the Premier League has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, so to continue doing that is incredible. It’s a big challenge ahead – we’ll be facing top players and strong opponents – but I’m ready for it.”
Adingra’s enthusiasm for the club’s project and his eagerness to contribute to Sunderland’s future success are evident in his remarks. As he joins the team, Sunderland fans will be looking forward to seeing how his skills and experience translate on the pitch in the upcoming Premier League season.
