Alexander Isak
Liverpool’s ongoing interest in Newcastle United’s star striker, Alexander Isak, has been a topic of much speculation this summer. The Reds, who have already bolstered their squad with the signings of Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, and Armin Pecsi, as well as Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, are reportedly keen on further strengthening their attacking options. However, securing Isak’s signature appears to be a challenging prospect, as outlined by The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
David Ornstein said: “Newcastle have no intention of selling him [Isak] whatsoever. Their plan is to keep him, they would like to renew his contract. They’ve got three years left on his terms, he’s already being paid extremely well and I’m sure they would be prepared to take that higher. He’s at the centre of this project that’s Saudi-led and very ambitious.”
Ornstein continued: “If they were to be enticed into trading, the money would be huge. We’ve always heard around £150million [price tag], we don’t know that for certain – maybe it’s more, maybe it’s less – but it would be eye-watering money, no doubt. We don’t know what his representatives are doing, maybe they’re entertaining possibilities, maybe they’re hearing from interested parties.”
He added: “We know about the admiration that has been long-standing from Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, we know that Liverpool have admiration for him. But there’s no suggestion of any developments, so we can’t play it up further than that. There have been rumours and reports regularly. I think it would take some encouragement from Newcastle, from the representatives from both, for clubs to really test the water and the resolve of Newcastle. I would be shocked if any club was able to do that, in terms of his suitors [including] Arsenal, Liverpool and so on, without shipping some players out to facilitate the financial space, not just on the transfer fee but also the salary.”
The situation surrounding Isak’s potential transfer is complex, with Newcastle United firmly positioning the Swedish international as a central figure in their ambitious, Saudi-led project. The club is reportedly unwilling to part with Isak and is even considering a contract renewal to secure his future at St. James’ Park. The financial implications of a potential deal are significant, with a speculated price tag around £150 million, which would require interested clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal to make substantial financial adjustments, including player sales, to accommodate both the transfer fee and Isak’s salary demands.
While Liverpool’s admiration for Isak is evident, the lack of concrete developments suggests that any move would require significant encouragement from both Newcastle and the player’s representatives. As it stands, the likelihood of Isak donning the Liverpool jersey this summer remains uncertain, with the club needing to navigate financial constraints and Newcastle’s firm stance on retaining their prized asset.
