A former Chelsea player, Geremi, who was instrumental in the club’s Premier League successes, has been banned from all football activities for five years. The decision was announced by the Cameroon FA following a dispute involving former Chelsea player and current Cameroon FA president, Samuel Eto’o. Geremi, known for his versatility and commitment on the field, played a pivotal role at Chelsea, making 109 appearances and scoring four goals. His career highlights include two Premier League titles and a memorable, albeit heart-breaking, moment in the 2007 Champions League semi-final against Liverpool.
José Mourinho said: “In my team I love to have Geremi on the bench because he’s a low-profile player who is ready to help, ready to fight for the team, ready to do the job I want him to do. If I need him to play right-winger, he can play right-winger.”
The Cameroon FA stated: “We sentence him to a ban from all forms of football activity for five years, and to a fine of ten million West African francs [£13,000]. He has ten days to submit a written appeal.”
The incident that led to Geremi’s ban occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023, where he reportedly clashed with a member of Eto’o’s staff. This altercation resulted in his removal from the dressing room, prompting Eto’o’s decision to impose the ban. Geremi’s assistant, Daniel Blaise Ngos, has also been affected, receiving a two-year ban and a fine of £6,500.
Geremi, who later captained Newcastle United and had brief stints in Turkey and Greece, is expected to appeal the ruling. There are suggestions that he might take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to seek a reduction or annulment of the ban and fine. The situation has drawn attention due to Geremi’s significant contributions to Chelsea and his reputation as a dedicated team player.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by former players in their post-playing careers and the impact of administrative decisions on their professional lives. As Geremi prepares his appeal, the football community will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds.
