Former Nottingham Forest chief executive Dane Murphy is poised to embark on a new chapter in his career within English football. After departing from Nottingham Forest in January 2023, Murphy is set to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer at Charlton Athletic. His tenure at Forest was marked by significant achievements, including helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League.
Charlton Athletic said: “Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce that the club is set to appoint Dane Murphy as Chief Executive Officer. Murphy will arrive with a proven track record of success, having played a key role in guiding Nottingham Forest to promotion to the Premier League, and previously overseeing Barnsley’s highest league finish in more than two decades.”
Gavin Carter said: “Dane is an ambitious, dynamic, and forward-thinking leader with experience at the top level of the game. He understands what it takes to create a high-performance culture and deliver results. His work at Nottingham Forest and Barnsley demonstrated a clear ability to elevate clubs and drive them forward. We’re continuing to build a strong and united leadership team to match our ambitions for Charlton.”
Murphy’s appointment at Charlton Athletic is seen as a strategic move to bolster the club’s leadership as they aim to achieve greater success. His previous role at Nottingham Forest saw him contribute significantly to the club’s rise, culminating in their promotion to the Premier League after winning the Championship play-offs under head coach Steve Cooper in 2022. Murphy’s departure from Forest was described as a mutual decision, allowing him to explore new opportunities.
The transition at Nottingham Forest has continued with the appointment of Lina Souloukou as CEO, effective from January 5, following Murphy’s exit. The club has undergone several changes in its hierarchy since then, reflecting a period of restructuring and new leadership.
Murphy’s new role at Charlton Athletic is anticipated to bring his expertise and experience to the fore, as he aims to replicate his success at Forest and Barnsley. His appointment is part of Charlton’s broader strategy to strengthen their leadership team and achieve their ambitions in the competitive landscape of English football.
