Emiliano Martinez’s emotional reaction following Aston Villa’s recent 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur has ignited speculation about his potential departure from the club this summer. The Argentine goalkeeper, who has been pivotal in Villa’s recent successes, appeared visibly moved as he acknowledged the fans, leading many to believe that a farewell could be imminent.
Martinez said: “At full time, it looked very evident that he is going to be leaving the club in the summer, which is a bit of a surprise to be honest with you. He was in tears at full time, which leads me to believe that something’s already in the pipeline. I think this is a massive problem for Villa and I honestly think it’s almost like they’re sleepwalking into a massive problem. One’s the manager and one’s Emi Martinez, because I still think Emi has got another three or four years left at the top level. He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”
Martinez, who joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020, has been instrumental in the team’s achievements, including securing a spot in the Champions League and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals this season. His international career is equally impressive, boasting two Copa America titles and a World Cup victory with Argentina. Despite signing a new four-year contract last August, reports suggest that Villa is preparing for the possibility of Martinez’s exit.
Villa manager Emery said: “Of course, it is the last match (of the season) here, and I don’t know. We will see about the team, the players, but of course, they are responding on the field, at the moment they are responding and they are so, so focused in how we are preparing and playing each match.”
Martinez is one of Villa’s top earners, and the club is reportedly open to considering bids for him. Arsenal target Joan Garcia from Espanyol is believed to be on Villa’s radar as a potential replacement. Garcia has a £21 million release clause in his contract and has expressed his readiness to leave the La Liga side.
The situation presents a significant challenge for Villa, as Martinez’s departure would leave a considerable void in their squad. Fans and analysts alike are keenly watching to see how the club navigates this potential transition and whether Martinez will indeed make his exit this summer.
