Magpies head coach Eddie Howe is expected to rest many of his key men for this Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie with League Two Bromley, but will not be taking the game too lightly. However, with two Premier League games next week, Howe will not take any risks on players carrying knocks. Those include goal talisman Alexander Isak and Dutch defender Sven Botman, who were both left nursing injuries in midweek.
Eddie Howe said “Alex was just feeling his hamstring a little bit. We had a couple of other players struggling so we had to manage them.” He also mentioned that with a week’s rest, Isak should return against Wolves next week (Jan 15).
Sven Botman, the Dutch defender, put in two gut-busting displays at Spurs and Arsenal after nine months on the sidelines, but Howe revealed he has a slight groin issue after the rearguard action at the Emirates.
Eddie Howe said “He was just feeling his groin. He felt that he was able to continue, and with him and the medical staff, we felt that he was able to go out for the second half.” He also mentioned that Botman is unlikely to be risked against Bromley on Sunday but could well return against Wolves. (Jan 15).
Regarding the midfielder,
Eddie Howe said “Joe took a nasty knock”.
He also mentioned that the midfielder is being assessed but it is not thought to be serious and he should return for the Wolves game (Jan 15). Martin Dubravka has performed well in his absence, but the Slovakian could be set to leave Newcastle this week, with Pope hoping to return for Wolves or Bournemouth.
Eddie Howe said “Nick is starting goalkeeping work, so he’s back on the grass. He’s not yet fully training with the group.” He also mentioned that United had hoped he would be back mid-January, with Wolves, or possibly Bournemouth a target.
Regarding Callum,
Eddie Howe said “I really feel for Callum. We see the work, the dedication, the professionalism that he’s shown, not just in the recovery from this injury, but throughout his career. To me he’s an inspirational player and when you’re in these moments, you have to understand how difficult this season has been for him.” He also mentioned that Callum is expected to return in mid-February.
Emil Krath, although not a first-team regular, United have missed their versatile Swedish defender and the back-up options he provides for Howe. He has been out since the end of October after dislocating his shoulder but could be back in a few weeks.
Eddie Howe said “Emil is working well after undergoing surgery and is back on the grass and running.” He also mentioned that Emil is expected to return in early February.
Jamaal Lascelles, like Sven Botman before him, United have ensured Lascelles is not rushed back from knee surgery last spring. He had a similar recovery time to Botman, and could return to the squad next month.
Eddie Howe said “He is very focused. We always said he was a bit behind Sven (Botman).” He also mentioned that Lascelles is expected to return in February.
