Southampton’s manager, Juric, has been questioned twice about the club’s transfer approach this month, ahead of a meeting scheduled for this week. Prior to the match against Brentford, Juric was asked about the club’s plans.
Ivan Juric said “No, we will have a meeting next week and then we will decide what to do. My brief verdict on where the club is at, as we head towards a second relegation.”
Tuesday marked the seventh day of the January transfer window being open, with the deadline not until February 3. Southampton, however, has been aware of their precarious position for months, looking likely to be relegated to the Championship. Juric’s team is currently 10 points from safety, eight points behind Leicester City in 19th place, having won only one of their 20 Premier League matches.
Former manager Russell Martin had hinted that he needed positive results over the festive period to convince the Saints board to support him in the transfer market. This suggests that the club’s management is likely preparing for a return to the Championship, rather than making a risky bid for survival.
Juric admitted that the Saints are looking to return loanee Maxwel Cornet to West Ham, if the Hammers agree to do so. Cornet has not played in the league since September.
Ivan Juric said “That’s the idea that he goes back to West Ham,” which was misunderstood at the time as confirmation that the deal was already cancelled.
The club’s focus is primarily on departures. They have already arranged a development loan at QPR for Ronnie Edwards. The Saints have used all 25 of their Premier League registration spots and cannot register a new player over the age of 21 without unassigning another.
They have confirmed the arrival of Brazilian defender Welington, but Juric clarified his status.
Ivan Juric said “He is not available yet. He is working out of the team.”
Kyle Walker-Peters’ contract is set to expire in the summer with no new deal in sight, raising questions about his potential sale. Armel Bella-Kotchap and Kamaldeen Sulemana remain available, pending the right offer, despite their reintegration into the squad under Juric. The lack of a clear plan for the transfer window from the club seems unusual and suggests that there may not be any major developments before the deadline.
