In another, all premier league clash, struggling Nottingham Forest scored a huge cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur and gave their beleaguered manager Brian Clough a boost and vote of confidence. Clough had steered Forest to four Wembley triumphs under the competition’s various labels and on this evidence, few were suggesting that they were the dark horses to go all the way that season. The match did have its own share of controversies as Stuart Pearce angrily pushed Ray Clemence as the Tottenham coach held on the ball after it had rolled out of play, later, there was a similar incident involving Nigel Clough and Tottenham manager Doug Livermore.
