Morgan Gibbs-White should be doubling his goal output despite netting the winner in Nottingham Forest’ s first away game of the Premier League season. The attacker opened his account in the 70th minute of the Reds’ 1-0 victory at St Mary’s , a well-deserved victory that means Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have taken four points from their first two games. Gibbs-White was part of a Forest team that produced 23 shots, despite having only 35 per cent of the ball and a team that was far more effective than Russell Martin’s. It has his first goal of this campaign, having scored five both last term and in the 2022/23 season.
Pundit Micah Richards says that’s not enough and told Match of the Day :
Micah Richards said “The game against Newcastle last week they [Southampton] had a lot of possession as well but they don’t score a goal. You look at the stats there 128 passes per shot, you need to bring a little bit of what they did last season in terms of being comfortable on the ball – but they need to get the ball forward quicker. That’s what Nottingham Forest did, that is the difference. I know Forest have got that Premier League experience, Southampton are just sort of finding their way but there’s no way you should dominate that possession with all those sideways passes. In terms of the quality they have a little bit more, they are getting the ball forward a lot quicker. Gibbs-White I thought was very good, Hudson-Odoi on the other side as well, they are a threat with that pace, dynamism down the wings and ultimately that was the difference in this game. We have talked about Morgan Gibbs-White so many times on this show, I think he has scored five goals in the last two seasons, he has talked about he wants to do better and I think he has got the ability to do better, he should be looking at ten Premier League goals.”
