Manchester United legend & Everton boyhood fan Wayne Rooney has been backing Liverpool to win not only this year’s Premier League – but multiple titles – if they can keep hold of manager Jurgen Klopp. Writing in his Sunday Times column, the Derby County player who is Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer with two spells at Goodison Park either side.
Wayne Rooney said “Not that it is nice, as an Evertonian, describing how good Liverpool — and especially their manager — are. My wife, father-in-law and brothers-in-law are all reds. For years they suffered as I won titles with Manchester United and I suppose it is my time to suffer now. I don’t want to see Liverpool win anything but as a lover of football I respect how they are playing and have to admit that when they become champions it will be well deserved. When, 16 years ago, I moved to Old Trafford, it was not just to play for United, it was because I wanted to play for Alex Ferguson. Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard used to ask me about Fergie and I know those two would love to have played for him — just not at United obviously. It’s the same for me with Klopp. I would love to play for him, only at somewhere other than Liverpool. United dominated because Fergie stayed so long. I think if Klopp, who is only 53, stayed at Anfield for the next ten years Liverpool would win at least five Premier League titles. He could keep building great sides because, as I mentioned, players join clubs to work with managers as good as him.”
