In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are reviving some of the moments from past which will restore golden history of the best league in the world.
Saturday papers in the UK covered the call of playing for pride from Middlesborough manager Lennie Lawrence, Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson warned his players to not think about the European tie against Glasgow Rangers, a new executive stand was set to be unveiled at Nottingham Forest’s city ground and “Cheat” Gordon Durie was banned for three matches by the English FA for feigning an injury.
Lennie Lawrence had called on his makeshift side to play with pride to try and extend their unbeaten away run at Tottenham Hotspur later that day. Middlesborough was set to go to White Hart Lane having picked up points in their last three away games. However, they were without five injured players while another two –Steve Pears and Paul Wilkinson still have to prove their 100 percent fitness. Lawrence said “Sometimes going into a game without a few players missing can bring the best out of the rest of the team. That’s what we have to look for. We need to be totally right mentally. We must play with pride and with spirit because if we don’t, we will surely lose.”
Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson had banned all dressing room talk about the upcoming week’s European showdown with Glasgow Rangers until the Yorkshire Derby against Sheffield United was over. Wilkinson was expected to field the same line up with super sub-Carl Shutt back on the bench. Wilkinson said “Our immediate priority must be three points because we need to get a run of league wins going if we are to defend our title. There will be time enough to concentrate on Rangers after tomorrow’s game.” Starman Eric Cantona proved his recovery from tonsillitis with an impressive goalscoring display against Austria during the international break.
Nottingham Forest was in a celebratory mood as their new £4.28 million Executive stands were about to be opened in their home game against Arsenal that weekend. Forest was looking for their first win since the opening day of the season.
Gordon Durie was “devastated” after being branded a football cheat by the English FA. A three-man disciplinary commission decided that Tottenham’s £2.2 million record buy had feigned injury during the premier league match against Coventry on August 18. They found him guilty of misconduct and banned him for three matches. Gordon Taylor spoke on behalf of the player and said “We are very disappointed with the decision and Gordon is devasted by this. His reputation has been damaged and there will surely be an appeal.”
