In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are reviving some of the moments from past which will restore golden history of the best league in the world.
Friday’s papers in the UK covered the upcoming round of the Premier League matches which involved the big clash between arch-rivals Manchester United and Liverpool, a game that young Reds star Don Hutchison hailed as the biggest of the season. In other matches, Everton was taking on Coventry City at the Goodison Park and a new deal for Chelsea goalkeeper Kevin Hitchcock.
In the headline clash of that week, Manchester United was set to take on arch-rivals Liverpool. United, still disappointed to have missed out on the league title the previous season were sixth in the table. Five points behind the leaders Blackburn Rovers. Ryan Giggs had been their star that season and with a fit again Bryan Robson, their league form had started to improve. Liverpool, on the other hand, were having a dismal start to the season with their manager Graeme Souness questioned by the faithful on and off the field. They were 16th on the table with just three victories under their belt and were seven points behind the Red devils.
The other team from the Merseyside, Everton were set to take on the surprise package of that season until then, Coventry City. Many experts predicted them to go down that season and dismissed their early season good form as a fluke but they went into the game 11 places above the Toffees. They went into the clash at Goodison Park with an impeccable away record that season having won four times and drawing one. Coventry was missing their star in-form striker Kevin Gallacher.
Gateshead born Liverpool star Don Hutchison described the upcoming clash against Manchester United as the biggest of the season for Liverpool. Hutchinson who idolized Glenn Hoddle and Paul Gascoigne were relishing the prospect of playing against the likes of Paul Ince and Bryan Robson, he said “I’ve never been the type who gets nervous. I get butterflies but I never get worried about games. This will probably be the biggest game of the season for us. Games against United are like derbies.”
Chelsea keeper Kevin Hitchcock earned himself a four-year contract after impressing boss Ian Porterfield since he took over from Dave Beasant between the sticks. Young goalkeeper Nick Colgad had also been taken by Chelsea until the end of the season as cover. Earlier in the season, Porterfield sidelined Beasant after a series of high profile mistakes which cost the pensioners vital points.
