Adama Traoere believes Wolves proved they are more than up for the fight in their comeback win over Southampton. Julen Lopetegui’s side fell behind in the crucial game at St. Mary’s as Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz opened the scoring. Wolves’ day then went from bad to worse as Mario Lemina was shown a controversial second yellow card in the 27th minute for approaching referee Jarred Gillett. However, Wolves rallied after the break to record an important three points that ultimately cost Nathan Jones his job.
The comeback started as Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek conspired to bundle the ball into his own net before new signing Joao Gomes slammed in his first goal, three minutes from time. It is a win that sees Wolves move five points away from the drop zone and Adama Traore feels that the team are showcasing a different mentality under Lopetegui.
Adama Traoere said: “We always have to believe, we never surrender, it doesn’t matter the situation, we have to keep fighting. That’s the mentality we have and that’s the mentality the gaffer wants. It was amazing. I think the team had very good spirit, we had one man less, but we kept going, kept fighting and the result came. We believed and, in the end, we got the result. We have for sure (turned a corner). We have to keep believing. The game, it was amazing, how we came back, and we have to keep going. Enjoy it, we won, and we keep on working.”
Wolves will be aiming to stop looking over their shoulders and look higher up the table, with the team two points off Crystal Palace in 12th. After the win over Southampton, Traore singled out Joao Gomes for praise, with the 22-year-old quickly making an impact at the club.
Adama Traoere added: “He’s a young lad, he has to keep working. He’s a great player and it was a day for him, he made the day for him. I’m so happy for him and we keep going.”
