Friday papers previewed games for upcoming weekend . Meanwhile, continuing with previous day stories, Aston Villa were waiting to hear whether Dean Saunders would be lining up for them against Crystal Palace next day. Saunders had expected to make his Villa debut after agreeing terms with manager Ron Atkinson earlier in the week. Also continuing previous day’s headlines, Dion Dublin’s broken leg had plunged Manchester United into a UEFA Cup crisis. Striker Dublin who had ligament damage was sidelined for at least five months. And manager Alex Ferguson, struggling to find 16 players who comply with European regulations, knew that any replacement signing would not be eligible for the first three rounds of the UEFA Cup. United, whose first priority was upcoming Sunday’s clash against Leeds, face Moscow Torpedo in the first round at Old Trafford on September 16. Ferguson was permitted to field only three foreigners plus another two ‘overseas’ players who have been at the club for five years including three at youth level. Only Clayton Blackmore, of Wales, met that criterion, while United currently have only eight Englishmen fit. They were Steve Bruce, Paul Ince, Gary Pallister, Lee Martin, Neil Webb, Danny Wallace, Russell Beardsmore and reserve goalkeeper, Gary Walsh. Ferguson was so worried that he pulled Webb and Wallace out of previous night’s reserve game at Leicester and fielded nine of his FA Youth Cup-winning side rather than risk further casualties.
In other top of table Norwich City’s team news, Lee Power was in luck and he said “I did not even expect to be at the club this year. I thought I was on my way to Watford this summer for £300.000. Now I’m looking for my third goal in three starts tomorrow against Southampton.” It has been a high-flying rise in the Canaries pecking order for Power. He had watched Robert Fleck’s million-plus move to Chelsea, and injuries to Ruel Fox and Mark Robins, catapult him into the first team. New manager Mike Walker freely admitted he was not sure of what his first 11 was. all places were up for grabs if the performance warranted it and Power had grabbed his opportunity with both hands. “It’s absolutely brilliant to be in the side but for us to be top of the league is a real bonus, the bookies had us down as the favorites for relegation so this kind of start is extra-special. We have had a talk among ourselves about the situation and we except that we have got to be as professional as possible. It is very easy to raise your game for Nottingham Forest and the TV cameras. but tomorrow at home to Southampton we have to play with the same fire.” ” continued Power.
Finally, Trevor Francis had set his sights on bringing Blackburn Rovers misfit Roy Wegerle to Hillsborough. Sheffield Wednesday boss Francis who saw Wegerle as the ideal replacement for injured David Hirst wanted the player he once signed for QPR on loan with a view to a permanent move. Wegerle had been unable to claim a regular place in Kenny Dalglish’s first team since his £1.1 m more to Ewood Park previous season.
