Robert Fleck breathed a sigh of relief last night after breaking his Chelsea duck in win at Aston Villa. The £2.1 million signing from Norwich helped end Chelsea’s hoodoo on a ground where they had not won for over a decade and then admitted: “I hope that’s the first of many.”
Manager lan Porterfield said: “Fleck needed that goal for his confidence. But I thought the work-rate of the entire side was magnificent, although we had the breaks at the right time.” Villa were in command at the outset and took the lead in the 31st minute when skipper Kevin Richardson blasted a powerful 20- yard drive past Dave Beasant. But in a nightmare couple of minutes Villa’s hopes of recording their first home win disappeared. Defensive shortcomings were exposed when Fleck collected Andy Townsend’s pass to score in the 40th minute. Two minutes later Fleck engineered the opening for Newton to score his second goal in two games, and a casual Villa defense paid the penalty in the 57th minute as Dennis Wise
Dublin’s broken leg marred Man Utd victory Manchester United 1 Crystal Palace 0 Dion Dublin, Manchester United’s £1m striker, was carried off with a broken leg to sour their first home win of the season. The 23-year-old, bought from Cambridge United on the eve of the new campaign, was sent crashing to the ground by Palace central defender Eric Young in the 42nd minute. It was later confirmed that he had suffered a fractured fibula.
It was another blow for jittery United, who had to wait until 30 seconds from the end for Mark Hughes to clinch victory. Substitute Andrei Kanchelskis Dublin’s replacement played the ball
High flying Coventry put a dampener on Chris Waddle’s home debut with another away win.
The Sky Blues, who have not lost at Hillsborough for seven years, went in front with a brilliant 42nd minute diving header by Peter Ndlovu. And they made it 2-0 in the 49th minute when Lee Hurst fired home more in the second half.
Teddy Sheringham hlit the fuse under Tottenham’s spluttering Premier League season at White Hart Lane. Sheringham scored on his home debut before Gordon Durie added a second goal every bit as bizarre as Jason Cundy’ fluke at Ipswich on Sunday.
Queens Park Rangers remained London’s top club in the Premier League after a frantic derby ended all square at Loftus Road. They were left fuming for not getting apenalty when Arsenal’s Lee Dixon clearly appeared to trip winger Andy Sinton. Rangers captain Ray Wilkins was booked for leading the protests in the 20th minute and it was the biggest flash-point of a high-tempo tussle which ended with three yellow cards on each side and a grandstand finish. Three minutes from time Arsenal £2.5m striker lan Wright missed the best chance of the match.
In other interesting news related to broadcasting rights for premier league in UK, sports fans who had installed a dish and receiver/decoder to watch Astra satellite channels are paying a new monthly subscription fee of up to £5.99 to see live coverage of this season’s Premier League soccer matches on Sky Sports. BSkyB needed to collect (and keep!) a lot of customers for the channel to cover its outlay of £304 million for first-class football fixtures spread over five seasons.
Dean Saunders anxiously waited developments as his move from Liverpool to Aston Villa remained deadlocked over the fee. Villa were optimistic that they will still land the 28year-old Welsh international striker, who was said to be prepared to take a drop in his B,OOO-a-week salary.
Negotiations are still in progress.” said Villa manager Ron Atkinson. Atkinson thought that he had landed Saunders on Tuesday, but the switch hit a snag when the fee he thought he had agreed with Anfield counterpart Graeme Souness, apparently fell £200,000 short of Liverpool’s £2.3m asking price.
