Other headlines on this day provided key injury updates of premier league teams before matches later in the day – Winger John Hendrie lost his battle to be fit for Middlesbrough’s clash with Ipswich Town at Ayresome Park later that night.
Robbie Mustoe was expected to keep his place in an unchanged team, though manager Lennie Lawrence could revert to a 4-3-3 formation. Boro record signing Derek Whyte has been named in the Scotland squad for the trip to Switzerland next week but Lawrence was disappointed that there was no place for Willie Falconer. He said: “I’m pleased for Whyte but I had hoped that Falconer would make it as well. “Perhaps his chance will come later. I have spoken to the Scottish people and they are aware of him.”
