Monday papers highlighted one match which took place on Sunday –
Ipswich Town 1 Tottenham Hotspur 1
Headlines focussed on spectacular goal scored by Jason Cundy for Tottenham. From ten yards inside the Ipswich, he thumped the ball away from an Ipswich throw but the clearance became wind assisted and the ball flew goalwards where Craig Forrest was standing on the edge of his six-yard box.

During the match, Cundy may be a novice when it comes to goalscoring but in John Wark, 35, Ipswich had a player whose pedigree in this respect was considered second to none. In injury time at the end of the first half he showed that his sense of timing has not been blunted by the years when ran from midfield to beat lan Walker to the ball and lob over the goalkeeper for the equaliser.
The papers also discussed disappointment of David James with leaky defense of Liverpool team and debated his prospects of selection with England squad. When he joined Liverpool from Watford during the close season, David James may not have expected to have quite so much work to do in the Merseysiders’ goal. The 6’4″ youngster seemingly failed to grasp, however, was that the unexpected frailty of the Liverpool rearguard could work to his advantage in one way. James may have had to work overtime during his new team’s uncertain start in the Premier League but it had given him the perfect opportunity to show how good he was. By keeping Liverpool in a lot of their opening five matches, he had considerably improved his prospects of international recognition especially with England national team for years to come.
