Wimbledon was one of the favourites to get relegated the season earlier and many thought that Joe Kinnear was too inexperienced to keep the South London club in the premiership. And when they found themselves third from bottom at Christmas, there was little hope for a club that was constantly fighting off-field battles with Vinnie Jones and owner Sam Hammam.
But Kinnear’s side turned the tables when they won 4-0 against local rivals Crystal Palace and even beat league leaders Manchester United. But limited transfer budget meant it was going to be another season of fighting relegation for the Dons as Alan Kimble and Marcus Gayle were the only first-team additions brought on cut-price deals.
