Hugo Lloris delivered an honest verdict of his side’s performance when their trip to Old Trafford ended in a 3-2 defeat on Saturday. As always, Antonio Conte gave an honest assessment on the position his side are in, during his post match press conference.
Antonio Conte said: “If you want to be competitive, if you want to improve your level you have to try, to work a lot. At this moment the team needs to work a lot on many aspects. At the same time we have to be stable, to be stable and to keep good results in every moment. Instead we are doing up and down, up and down.”
With the skill from Ronaldo’s goals, it was difficult for Lloris to do much about them. The skipper made a couple of good saves in both halves, with United having ten shots in the game, six of which were on target. In his post match interview the World Cup winner gave his verdict of the defeat.
Hugo Lloris said: “If we talk about the result, obviously there is a lot of disappointment, especially after the performance we delivered. We can only analyse the goal we conceded, I think we could have done better. We have some regrets because when we score the 1-1, we cannot concede three minutes later for 2-1 and then when we come back 2-2, I think is the moment to close the game.”
That was a key problem for Conte’s side – failing to take chances when the score line was level, which would’ve helped them secure the needed three points.
Hugo Lloris said: “There is different ways to close the game – to reduce the space, to keep possession of the ball and to be stronger in the momentum of the opponents. We conceded this corner and unlucky for us but big damage on the result.”
Despite the loss, the 35-year-old did give praise to his side for the display.
Hugo Lloris admitted: “I think we had a great performance. We need to improve in some aspects of the game but when you look at the performance today I think you can really see the direction we want to take as a team. Come here and take control of the ball like we did, staying calm, I think we show personality but it’s difficult to defend the performance when you have the defeat.”
Spurs had 57 per cent possession but Lloris highlighted that this isn’t enough and with Ronaldo stealing the show with his damaging hat-trick, the skipper didn’t fail to praise the star player.
Hugo Lloris added: “In football, the possession is not enough and also tonight was the great Cristiano Ronaldo that brought the result in Manchester United’s side,” he said. We are to be focused on ourselves. There’s still 11 games to play. We knew that game could be decisive for the rest of the season but again, it’s not time to give up. We need to keep hope for the European places.”
The Lilywhites don’t have much rest as they travel to play Brighton on Wednesday, before a return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to host their tie against West Ham on Sunday.
Hugo Lloris said: “We know that next week is a really important week before the international break. It’s really important to analyse this game [vs Man United] and understand why we could not turn the result in our side and why we could not keep the result. We can see the improvement, we can feel the improvement, the players on the field and it’s not time to give up. Today we can be really disappointed, obviously, but tomorrow it’s time to prepare for the next game because Brighton is going to be another battle to deal with and we cannot lose points anymore.”
Graham Potter’s side go into Wednesday’s tie on the back of a defeat to Liverpool but with some decent displays so far this season, it won’t be an easy three points for Tottenham, but is a win they desperately need.
