It has taken some time but Antonio Conte and Tottenham are now getting plenty of joy from the wing-back positions. A key component of his Chelsea team, with both Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso regularly chipping in with goals and assists on a regular basis, Conte also had Achraf Hakimi doing likewise at Inter Milan.
Antonio Conte said: “This type of system the wing-backs are fundamental importance. Very, very important. Our wing-backs are improving and we are working also with specific work for this role. I am pleased for Doherty. Matthew is one of the players that are more improved from when I arrived. Now showing great personality, great quality also, but my expectation also for Emerson, Reguilon and Sessegnon is the same. They are improving. There is the desire, the will to improve. For sure in the last period I was disappointed for the ups and downs we did. I’d like to have a team more stable for this reason. I’m telling you enjoy tonight, this win, our fans to enjoy, but from tomorrow on my players start to think on Saturday. Saturday we have another tough game and we want to be competitive and to show we have a good level to fight.”
Undoubtedly his finest performance in a Tottenham shirt, Doherty’s display against Everton has left fans wanting more from him in the weeks ahead.
