Arsenal’s midfield problems have been well-documented this month. Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny are both at the Africa Cup of Nations representing their respective countries, and with Ainsley Maitland-Niles joining AS Roma on loan over the weekend, Mikel Arteta has a real lack of options. Arteta, when speaking to the media last week, confirmed that the Gunners will be looking for a new midfielder to bring in this month due to their severe lack of options.
Mikel Arteta said: “We are very, very short at the moment. Obviously we are going to move and we are going to look for options because we are very short.”
When speaking to the press last week, Arteta was asked about the possibility of his former team-mate making a sensational return.
Mikel Arterta said: “First of all, it’s great to have him around because he adds this special feeling to the club. His talent is unquestionable, I think you’ve heard some players say he’s the best in training. It’s up to him the next step in his career and we’re here to support that.”
When asked directly whether he would return to Arsenal, Arteta responded: “That’s a different story.” Meanwhile, Wilshere himself is remaining coy on where his future lies, when speaking to Goal in October 2021.
