Coventry City had signed Blackburn Rovers striker Roy Wegerle in a surprise £1.5 million exchange deal which took Kevin Gallacher in the opposite direction. The 29 years old South African joined his new teammates for training that day after agreeing on terms with Sky blues manager Bobby Gould. He was set to make his debut in the premier league clash against Sheffield United while Gallacher would line up for Blackburn against QPR.
Scottish International Gallacher was Coventry’s record signing at £900000 when he moved from Dundee United just three years earlier. But he had been hampered by a hamstring problem that season and had just got back to the side.
