Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan was in no hurry to buy a central defender despite their loss to QPR a week earlier. Keegan, who had Steve Howey three weeks away from return said that the result was one off and he was not going to panic buy even though the money was made available to him by the board.
Kevin Keegan said ‘’A player of Les Ferdinand ability will give any central defender a roasting. But you have got to look, not just at our central defenders, but at the service which Ferdinand was getting from other parts of the field and aho the fact that their players were getting on the end of his headers instead of our players. “And if you think Les Ferdinand plays like that every week, you would be wrong. I have seen him play three times and he has not played that well before. The money has been there for a long time but the right players have not been available, I wont be chopping and changing. Any player that comes in has got to be better than the ones we have got. That’s why it has taken so long. But players who aren’t available can suddenly become available. So we never know.’’
