Michael Carrick Manchester United
Paul Scholes, the former Manchester United midfielder, has found himself in the spotlight following a controversial social media post about Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick. Scholes attempted to clarify his remarks on his podcast, but his explanation has not convinced everyone.
Paul Scholes said: “It was in no way intended to be offensive towards Michael. Michael is one of the nicest people you will ever meet in football, he’d be the last person that I would want to offend. I messaged Michael anyway. I went straight to Michael and said, ‘Look, I was never intending to upset you’. And I don’t think I needed to say that anyway, and he told me himself he wasn’t upset by it. I think people have just taken it differently from what was meant. The only thing I was saying was that I don’t think they played that well the last four games and he’s still managing to get results. We had the greatest manager in the world and he always said sometimes you need a bit of luck. So with sending-offs and different things that happen through games, sometimes you do need a bit of luck, that’s all I was saying.”
The controversy began after Scholes posted a message on social media following Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle, suggesting that Carrick had a special quality because the team had been underperforming in recent games. Scholes later elaborated on his comments during his podcast, attempting to frame his remarks as a reflection on the role of luck in football.
While Scholes has a storied legacy at Manchester United, having won 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies, his post-playing career has seen him transition into a media personality. This shift has not been without its challenges, as Scholes has occasionally faced criticism for his outspoken views on his former club.
Despite Scholes’ attempt to downplay the incident, the timing of his comments has raised eyebrows. Carrick, who has been well-received by the United fanbase since taking on the head coach role, has managed to secure results without courting controversy. In contrast, Scholes’ remarks have been perceived by some as unnecessary and personal, potentially damaging his reputation among fans.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Scholes’ explanation will placate those who were offended by his comments. For now, the former midfielder’s relationship with his old club appears to be under scrutiny, as he navigates the complexities of his post-punditry career.
