Unai Emery
Aston Villa’s youth academy continues to produce promising talents, and the latest to catch the eye is George Hemmings. At just 18 years and ten months old, Hemmings has become the youngest player to start under Villa boss Unai Emery, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. Despite Villa’s already secured spot in the Europa League knockout rounds, Hemmings was trusted to start in a crucial match against RB Salzburg, highlighting the faith the coaching staff has in his abilities.
Unai Emery said: “We have George Hemmings, he’s training with us, knowing, tactically, everything we need. He has huge potential, and maybe it’s a moment he can help us.”
Hemmings’ journey to the first team has been impressive. After joining Villa from Nottingham Forest in January 2024, he quickly made his mark in the under-18s and under-21s, even helping the latter reach the knockout rounds of the UEFA Youth League. His first taste of senior football came in the summer of 2025 during pre-season friendlies, where he showcased his skills against teams like AS Roma and Marseille.
A teammate of Hemmings said: “George is a very talented player, humble and hard-working. He’s not fazed by any occasion.”
Hemmings made his Premier League debut on December 30th against Arsenal and later appeared at Villa Park against Everton, maintaining a perfect passing record in his initial league outings. His European debut came in Istanbul against Fenerbahce, setting the stage for his first professional start against RB Salzburg.
Despite being substituted at half-time with Villa trailing 1-0, Hemmings’ potential remains undeniable. The team struggled to progress due to the opposition’s press, which often left Hemmings and his teammates in challenging situations. However, with Villa’s current midfield injury crisis, including the sidelining of key players like Youri Tielemans and John McGinn, Hemmings is likely to see more opportunities to develop and contribute to the team.
As Villa prepares to face Brentford, the return of Douglas Luiz and Ross Barkley will bolster the squad. Avoiding defeat against Brentford could see Villa climb to second in the league, depending on Manchester City’s results. For Hemmings, this season presents a valuable learning curve, and his performances will be closely watched by fans and management alike.
