Gareth Southgate Manager
Gareth Southgate, former England manager, has announced a new direction in his career with the launch of a podcast titled “The Football Boardroom.” At 55, Southgate seems to be stepping away from traditional management roles, opting instead to share his extensive experiences and insights from his eight-year tenure as England’s boss. The podcast will feature Southgate alongside Christian Purslow, former Aston Villa chief executive, and journalist Henry Winter. It promises to unveil behind-the-scenes details of football management and the intricate dynamics within club boardrooms.
Gareth Southgate said: “What happens in the Football Boardroom? It’s time to find out. Along with my business partner Jimmy Worrall, I’m pleased to announce the launch of a new podcast, The Football Boardroom. As England Manager, I was invited into every Premier League boardroom whenever I attended a match. While I was there primarily to watch players, another important part of the role was building relationships with managers, football directors, chief executives and, when they were present, owners. Over eight years, that added up to well over a thousand opportunities to observe how football clubs really function behind the scenes. The decisions, the dynamics, the personalities.”
He continued: “It offered a remarkable insight into the business of the game and the people who shape it. Those moments are influenced, sometimes decisively, by a much bigger game being played off the pitch. A game of money, power and politics, often conducted behind closed doors, where the stakes are extraordinarily high. The Football Boardroom aims to open those doors.”
Southgate’s new venture is set to provide listeners with a unique perspective on the inner workings of football clubs, drawing from his vast experience interacting with key figures in the sport. The podcast will explore the complex interplay of decisions, dynamics, and personalities that define football management. Among the notable figures Southgate encountered during his career is Christian Purslow, who served as Aston Villa’s CEO from 2018 to 2023 and previously held senior roles at Liverpool. Purslow played a significant role in Liverpool’s transition of ownership from Tom Hicks and George Gillett to the Fenway Sports Group.
This move by Southgate marks a significant shift from his previous role as a manager, suggesting a broader interest in the business and political aspects of football. His podcast aims to demystify the often opaque world of football boardrooms, offering fans and industry insiders alike a rare glimpse into the high-stakes decisions that shape the sport.
