Kenny Dalglish had turned down an opportunity to play for a Great Britain XI and asked instead to play for Liverpool. The former Anfield idol was due to play for an all-star side managed by Terry Venables in that week’s Steve Nicol’s testimonial game.
Kenny Dalglish said “I would always rather play with Liverpool than against them. I made Steve Nicol captain of Liverpool and he told me it was the best thing that had ever happened to him in football. That shows how much the club means to him. Everyone can see what a great player he is. And he can play in four or five positions as well. He is a great player who will never let Liverpool down.”
Steve Nicol said “I’m delighted Kenny is playing. Great players like him don’t come along too often. It was a pleasure to play alongside him and he is one of my closest friends.”
