Chris Sutton And Alan Shearer Blackburn
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has expressed his opinion that German forward Kuhn should remain in Scotland for another season to further establish his credentials. The 25-year-old player had an impressive season with Celtic, scoring 21 goals in 51 appearances and contributing 15 assists, including notable performances in the Champions League against Bayern Munich. Despite interest from clubs like Newcastle and RB Leipzig, Sutton believes that now is not the right time for Celtic to sell Kuhn.
Chris Sutton said: “Chat about a potential £15m bid for the winger has led to some fans suggesting the club should cash in. There will be a time to sell Kuhn. But now is not the time. I have my doubts Celtic would get £15m for the German this summer, for a start. He struggled at first in Scotland as he struggled having lost weight with those dental problems. Are teams going to cough up big money on the back of a spectacular six months? They might do, but I’m not so sure. Newcastle United were credited with interest back in January but I can’t see him shifting the likes of Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon. RB Leipzig are the ones mentioned now – and perhaps that’s understandable given he took his old club apart in the Champions League. It just seems like the wrong time to be even considering selling though. I think Celtic will struggle to get top dollar and yet I believe he will be worth more down the line. Kuhn isn’t ready for me. Sometimes you get the feeling a player has reached the natural stage where the next step is inevitable.”
Sutton’s comments reflect a cautious approach to Kuhn’s potential transfer, emphasizing the need for the player to continue his development at Celtic. Sutton, who has closely followed Kuhn’s progress since his move from Rapid Vienna in January 2024, acknowledges the forward’s talent but raises concerns about his consistency. The former striker suggests that Kuhn’s value could increase with more time at Celtic, drawing parallels to former players like Matt O’Riley and Kieran Tierney, who left the club at the right time for their careers.
The speculation around Kuhn’s future comes amidst interest from Newcastle United and RB Leipzig, with the latter being a particularly intriguing prospect given Kuhn’s performance against them in the Champions League. However, Sutton’s analysis points to the potential risks of a premature move, both for Kuhn’s career and Celtic’s financial return.
