Graeme Souness did another U-turn after vowing that he wanted to stay at Liverpool for another 10 years. The statement came just hours after his statement of “I’m off” post the defeat to Chelsea. But the Liverpool boss insisted that his original statement was in the spur of the moment and the emotional outburst meant nothing.
Graeme Souness said “I was deeply disappointed at Chelsea. I felt sick because we deserved to win and I could not have asked for more from the players. But the message I am trying to get across is that this is the only job I have ever wanted in football and I hope this is the only one I ever have. I have always wanted to work in this business until I was 50 and I hope in a two and a bit years time that I will have earned another contract here. My heart surgeon told me after my heart operation that I was in a stressful job, but given my age, it could be more stressful without it. There is no reason to suggest, the way I feel right now, that I won’t be well enough to continue for the forseeable future.”
