An injury-hit Coventry team had to throw in two young players in Tony Sheridan and Willie John Boland in the first team and both the young Irish players had made their manager Bobby Gould proud of the club’s scouting system as the light blues were fourth in the table that season. Boland was particularly impressive and he admitted that playing against the big boys was tough but it was a challenge that he was enjoying. The first five games that Boland had played included matches against Liverpool and Aston Villa.
Willie John Boland said “We have two long term injury problems with Lee Hurst and Stewart Robson both expected to be out until Christmas. It’s been tough enough in midfield but that’s the way I like it. Last week we were under a lot of pressure at Villa park and I was in the thick of things opposite Andy Townsend.”
