#PLStories- Southampton FC outcast Aribo shares reasoning for extended absence #SAINTSFC

The Nigerian international was signed from Rangers in the summer for an initial fee of around £6m. And Aribo immediately established himself as a crucial member of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team, appearing in each of the 14 Premier League games under the Austrian while starting ten of those. But following Hasenhuttl’s sacking shortly before the World Cup break, Aribo saw his minutes decline under Nathan Jones as he started just one of the eight games with the former Luton boss at the helm. READ MORE: Concern grows over Saints defender with second straight international absence Things have only gotten worse since Ruben Selles took over from Jones with Aribo not even making the matchday squad for the Spaniard’s six games. Currently away with Nigeria for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers home and away against Guinea-Bissai, it’s now been 86 days since Aribo last started in the Premier League. While he confirmed that he is fit to play, Aribo told Elegbete TV Sports that he is staying patient and waiting for the right timing. “It’s coach’s decision,” Aribo said of his lack of playing time. “I think every single coach has their own opinion on things.  “For me, I’m not really too fussed or too fazed because it’s all processes, it’s growing pains. I just need to be patient and just wait on god’s timing - which is perfect.” “Of course, it’s difficult,” he added about going from being a regular at Rangers to limited minutes with Saints.  “For any normal human it would be difficult. But for me, I don’t let that affect me too much. I’m pretty strong minded so how I deal with disappointment is I kind of use it to charge me and just try to improve the best I can.  “Again, it’s god’s plan. So at the end of the day, I shouldn’t stress, I should just have faith.”

#PLStories- Southampton star Joe Aribo calls on team to take on Hasenhuttl’s messages #SAINTSFC

SAINTS star Joe Aribo insisted “we’re all united” and called on himself and his teammates to take on the messages of manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. The Nigerian international, who stayed behind in the last break to work with the coaches in his first season at St Mary’s, has a second Premier League goal. Aribo, 26, opened the scoring right after the half-time break versus Everton but it would be worth nothing after Conor Coady and Dwight McNeil’s instant responses. The 2-1 defeat saw Saints slip to a third successive loss and ramped up pressure on boss Hasenhuttl, who a large section of supporters have lost patience with. However, Aribo insisted the group must remain together in order to turn around their slump in form. Aribo in action versus Everton (Pic: Stuart Martin) “We’re all united, we’re all together. We know how important it is to get out of this run we’re going through,” he told the Daily Echo. “The boys are working hard daily, we just need to take onboard the manager’s points to see what he needs to get results in the next few games.” Aribo added: “You can take positives from it, in football you’re going to have games where you have positives and negatives also. “We’re creating chances and that’s a good thing, we just need to find the back of the net and be a bit more focussed together defensively as a unit. “It’s definitely frustrating. I wouldn’t say we are worried because games are coming thick and fast. “As long as we get results and performances in the next games we will look back at this as just a blip in our season. We can’t dwell on it too much. It’s so important we get going together, as a team and as a unit, to get results.” Joe Aribo got us a pose to frame! 📷 pic.twitter.com/7Pjf6gv3MG — GOAL Africa (@GOALAfrica) October 1, 2022 However, the former Rangers star could not hide his frustration at the futility of his second goal since arriving in a summer £6million deal. “I’m really happy to score to get my numbers, but without a result it doesn’t mean anything,” he added. “It’s really frustrating for the team and for me that we haven’t got the win today. The boys are really frustrated, we wanted to get a result and to go a goal ahead puts you in a good place to get a result. “To concede so soon after scoring was really frustrating, and it was a bitter one to take. I think, in football, the games come thick and fast so we can’t dwell on a moment. “This game is gone and there’s nothing we can do to change it, all we can do is make it right in games to come. The boys need to dust ourselves off, recover and get back onto the training field.”  A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. #PLStories- Southampton ace Joe Aribo addresses reports of dressing room dissent #SAINTSFC

JOE Aribo addressed rumours of dissent towards manager Ralph Hasenhuttl from the Saints dressing room, saying: “I’ve not heard anything from the boys, you see we’re working together as a team.” The 26-year-old summer arrival scored his first Premier League goal during the 2-2 draw with Leeds United on Saturday, which saw the St Mary’s side come from two down in the second-half. Aribo was one of three substitutes by boss Hasenhuttl that changed the game, although many felt the Austrian’s initial team selection was not positive enough. Earlier that week, reports emerged elsewhere of dissent and distrust from some of Hasenhuttl’s players – who, after a poor run of form last season, are said to be dissatisfied with his management. Hasenhuttl came out firing in his post-match press conference, saying: “When you know your team and the amount they’re investing every day to be competitive, then you know this is sh*t.” Aribo, speaking at full-time after the draw, was asked for his verdict – from inside the Saints dressing room – on the claims. “You see the boys fighting, you see they’re working together as a team and it all starts on the pitch,” the Nigerian international responded. “That’s what we’re going to do, we’re going to fight, keep pushing and we’ll see what we do.” Aribo continued: “To be fair, I have not heard anything about it. I’ve just been focussed, obviously I’ve just come in and I’ve not heard anything from the boys. “Like I said, I’ve not seen it, not heard anything. I have just come in, the boys have welcomed me and we’ve been working hard on the training field together. “Everyone is ready to go, ready to fight, you saw it in the second-half. Everyone is ready to work together and do our best for the team.” St Mary’s risked becoming a toxic place, going two goals down to Leeds in the second match of the Premier League season – following a heavy defeat in the opener. However, aside from isolated pockets of home support and jeers from the away contingency, the stadium got behind their team to see them out of a losing position. “The fans helped us so much, they were amazing and kept going even when we were 2-0 down,” Aribo insisted. “Then, we saw the fight from the boys, the spirit in the team to come back and get a result.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. #PLStories- Southampton’s ‘shy’ Joe Aribo accepts important squad challenge #SAINTSFC

JOE Aribo admits he has always felt “like the shyer player” at previous clubs but now knows he needs to step up and help drive a young Premier League team forward. From a humble background in football – no time in an academy but instead straight from weekend league to Charlton Athletic at 18-years-old – Aribo’s path is well charted. Now 26, he is a Nigerian international with goalscoring experience in Scottish giants Rangers’ first European final since 2008; a cup and league title to his name. He described his Saints move, costing his new employers an initial £6million further rising with add-ons, as something he has “wanted since a child”. Aribo announced himself fully to St Mary’s with a 70-yard scorching solo run during the 2-1 pre-season defeat to Villarreal, scoring a second minutes later which was then ruled out. Joe Aribo scored his first in a Saints shirt on Saturday (Pic: Matt Temple) Yet, in the immediate aftermath, the physically imposing and technically impressive Aribo still carried himself with a notable timidness. “I think it was good for the boys, we needed it, it was a good run-out – especially (on Saturday), against good opposition,” he told the Daily Echo, first referencing his new teammates. “We’ve played a lot of good teams and it’s just finding that rhythm, taking on board what the manager’s telling us. “For me it was really easy to get involved and feel, I’ve already spoken about this, but they’re so welcoming. So I’ve felt at home since I’ve been here, they’ve been so welcoming.” Aribo broke into a laugh when asked at what point he realised he was going to take on four Villarreal defenders and score a first goal, albeit in pre-season, for his new club. “I went to pass it for Arma (Adam Armstrong) but the defender kind of read it so I said okay, I need to go for it now,” he joked. Let there be goals. 🙏 #SaintsFC pic.twitter.com/DzPWRRhv3s — Alfie House (@AlfieHouseEcho) July 31, 2022 “Luckily I was able to get through and finish it. It’s a massive feeling, I want to get into the rhythm of finding the back of the net. It’s really important for me to do that. “Hopefully I can keep that going into the season to come now. Football is about moments, that’s what I came here to do, to change games and leave my imprint on the pitch.” Although himself a new player in the Staplewood Campus group, Aribo immediately climbs to one of the more experienced stars in the entire squad. There is, of course, the elder statesmen in James Ward-Prowse, Stuart Armstrong, Oriol Romeu, Alex McCarthy and – playing bit-part roles – Willy Caballero and Theo Walcott. Both Joe Aribo and James Ward-Prowse can withstand incredible minutes over a season (Pic: Matt Temple) But when it comes to the Premier League matchday XIs, there is every chance Aribo has played more football in his career than up to eight, nine or 10 of his teammates. “It’s funny because I’ve always felt like the younger player, the shyer player, but now I’ve got to come into my own and step up,” Aribo pondered. “There’s a lot of young boys and they’re looking at me, I’ve got to help them. It’s important to have experienced players with the young players in the team. “They’re going to learn from us. They’re like sponges, they’ll learn and improve and it’s important to have that around the building.” Aribo might have to be something of a sponge himself, with Hasenhuttl already suggesting he sees the versatile midfielder’s future as a forward in his squad. The former Staines Town man had deputised all across the middle of the park and even in defence throughout his time under Steven Gerrard in Glasgow. “I’d probably say number 10, behind the striker,” Aribo identified, asked to pick his best position of the bunch. “I played as a right 10, in that position there I enjoyed playing but I’m happy to do anything for the team.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- New Southampton signing Joe Aribo admits not being a nervous player anymore #SAINTSFC

SUMMER signing Joe Aribo vowed to “embrace the moment” of his first Premier League campaign, as he hopes to help push Saints into Europe. The versatile midfielder made the move from Scottish giants Rangers to join Saints earlier this month, for a reported initial £6million. During his time at Ibrox, the 25-year-old helped the Glasgow side lift the Scottish Premiership title, as well as secure the Scottish Cup. He also scored in last season’s Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt. But having secured a new challenge with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this summer, Nigeria international Aribo insisted the draw of the Premier League always matched his ambition. Speaking to talkSPORT about his move, Aribo said: “Rangers are a massive club and it was amazing being there from minute one. “It was a really hard decision for me but my aim was always to play in the Premier League because it’s the best league in the world. “It’s always been a goal for me to reach that and so I had to take that opportunity.” Aribo played 60 minutes of Saints’ pre-season Friendly against RB Leipzig on Saturday, before also featuring in the second half against Klagenfurt on Monday night. With the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea all to come in August, Aribo is relishing the challenge that lies ahead for his new club. He said: “For me, I feel excitement. I’m not really a nervous player anymore, I used to be at times but now I just embrace the moment and embrace the occasion and I’m excited to get going and I can’t wait.” He added: “We want to push and we want to fight. “We want to get ourselves into the top half of the table and push for Europe, that’s the aim. “We need to give our best and do what we can as a team because we’re on a good journey here and I’m excited for what’s to come, so let’s see where that takes us.” Saints make the trip to Wealdstone to take on Championship Watford in a friendly on Saturday (3pm).
